SEDIBENG.- The Working on Fire Kishugu Joint Venture in Gauteng has recorded 46 fires by 21st August 2023.
The hot, dry, and windy weather conditions exacerbate the start of the wildland fires across the province. During the rainy season, a massive fuel load was accumulated which is dry and easy to burn now.
General Manager for Working on Fire Kishugu JV, Stephen Byes, said the landowners need to be vigilant as the critical stage of the fire season creeps in.
‘‘There is a spike in fire callouts which is an indication that the fire season is getting hectic and more grassland burning. Our teams remain on high alert and stand by across the bases in the province. They are ready to be dispatched to save lives, protect livelihoods and properties. Fires are becoming more prevalent because of the dry, hot, and windy weather conditions,’’ he said.
To date, Gauteng has recorded a total of 129 fires since the start of the winter fire season which were fought by Working on Fire Kishugu JV firefighters.
Boyes said that early preparations in fuel load reduction through slashing and burning fire breaks help in mitigating the dangers of wildland fires. He anticipates more fires in months to come.
