A conference for women in construction

"The participation of women must be visible in construction, they must not just only be heard and seen, they must be active participants."

VEREENIGING. – For Sedibeng to regain its former stance in the business community, the involvement, development, and support of those women is of high importance.

It is for this reason that the Khutlo Tharo Skills and Business Agency is calling all women in construction to a ‘Sedibeng Women in Business Conference’ that will be held at the Vereeniging Theatre in the Central Business District (CBD) of Vereeniging from Tuesday, 19 September to Wednesday, 20 September.

All women are called to celebrate Heritage Month with pride while learning the values of construction and property development.

Khutlo Tharo Skills and Business Agency’s Director, Rakgadi Seetsi.

Khutlo Tharo Skills and Business Agency’s Director, Rakgadi Seetsi said that the speakers at the two-day conference will be from the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM), the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), The South African Women in Construction (SAWIC), the Specialized Economic Zone and various property developers.

“It is important for women in construction not to miss this important conference. We have seen that there are many developments that are taking place in Sedibeng (Vaal) and many are coming, such as the River City Project, so women need to be given information and skills for them to be involved in such projects,” said Seetsi.

She further added that they want to unite women in construction and have an incubation program where they will be taught, the ‘ins and outs’, of construction.

Among critical issues that will be up for discussion on the two days are:

  • Challenges facing women in the industry
  • Upcoming projects
  • Assistance and support for emerging businesses

“The participation of women must be visible in construction, they must not just be heard and seen, they must be active participants. They must do things for themselves. We want all women of Sedibeng to be involved, women from Devon, Heidelberg, Midvaal, and Emfuleni as a whole, said Seetsi.

The other purpose of the conference is to include young women in the construction business, mentioned Seetsi.

“We have young, qualified women who have qualifications in courses such as Project Management, Safety and Engineering. They too need to come along so that we start them from a young age, they should not be left behind, they need to be ‘plugged’ in.”
