Khulisa Disability Network commemorates Disability Rights Awareness Month
Artists with disabilities across different mediums and genres have also been invited to participate and showcase their works.

SHARPEVILLE. – The Khulisa Disability Network has joined the global community to commemorate Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) from 3 November to 3 December.
The non-profit organisation is excited to announce that in line with the commemorations, it will be hosting the Khulisa Disability Arts Festival (KHUDAFE) this Friday, November 24 2023 at Sharpeville Human Rights Precinct.
The festival will be held from 10:00-13:00.

The Khulisa Disability Network, founded by Zolile Sidiya and Dumisani Radebe, the Khulisa Disability Network is dedicated to promoting inclusivity and celebrating the talents of people with disabilities.

“We have partnered with Emfuleni Local Municipality, Sedibeng Department of Education, The Department of Social Development, Gauteng SACR, and Kgalala Pty (Ltd),” said Sidiya.
Their objectives for the festival are:
- To celebrate the artistic achievements of People with Disabilities.
- To promote inclusivity by ensuring accessibility features for all attendees.
- To educate the audience about disability issues and break down stereotypes.
- To generate opportunities and empower individuals with disabilities in the arts.
At the festival, there will be a theme-based exhibition of visual and performing arts, with exhibits showcasing various forms of creative expression. Sidiya said that the theme will revolve around disability, aiming to challenge stereotypes and evoke diverse emotions among attendees.
“The festival will provide accessible performance spaces that accommodate different mobility needs. The stages and exhibition areas will be designed with ramps, wide doorways, and spaces for wheelchair users. Sign language interpreters will be available for performances, ensuring accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments.”
