Heavy winds leave mother and child hospitalised

“It will be difficult for us to sleep at night because we don’t know what to expect next."

BOIPATONG.- Once again heavy winds struck at Boipatong township leaving damage on Wednesday afternoon.

This time around these heavy winds left a mother and child hospitalised after their shack was crushed by a huge tree in the yard in France informal settlement. However, the child was released on the same day while the mother, Mpai Lapise, was still at the hospital at the time of going to print.

According to her neighbours who witnessed this horrible incident, Lapise and her child were trapped inside their shack after a heavy tree fell on their shack.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Lapise’s neigbours said that it was chaos in France with trees falling all over their houses during the strong winds. The other informal settlement where damage was done following the strong winds was Khayalethu on the same street as Boipatong Police Station.

The community told Sedibeng Ster that they fear for their lives because the rain seems not yet over. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the community pleaded with the municipality to cut the big trees in their yards.

“It will be difficult for us to sleep at night because we don’t know what to expect next. Some of us have pleaded with the municipality to cut those trees in our yard, especially after the first incident in December last year. I was in the bedroom with my children when a big tree fell on top of my house and we ran for cover,” said Richard Mofokeng who lives in Khayalethu informal settlement.

The heavy winds left Khayalethu informal settlement residents in pain.

A young man who introduced himself to Sedibeng Ster as Bheki Ntombela was lucky to escape what could have been a disaster after a tree also fell on his shack. Ntombela said fortunately he went to the shop when this happened.

When Sedibeng Ster arrived, community members and municipal employees were busy removing the trees that fell on the shacks and houses both in France and Khayalethu informal settlements.
