Boy (17) stabs friend to death over girlfriend

“My son had many friends, including girls. I do not believe that he died because of an argument over a girl."

BOIPATONG. – In the wake of the tragic incident that unfolded in Phase 3 (Cape Gate), Boipatong, a grieving mother, Mimi Mpele, seeks nothing more than clarity and closure surrounding the untimely loss of her beloved son.

The heart-wrenching events that transpired in the early hours of Monday claimed the life of Phehello Mpele (18), leaving behind a community in shock and sorrow. As details emerged, it was revealed that a 17-year-old boy, reportedly the victim’s best friend, now sits behind bars in connection with the incident.

According to police spokesperson, Thembeka Maxambela, authorities responded to a call regarding Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) around 2:00 AM, only to discover Phehello Mpele with a fatal stab wound upon arrival at the scene.

Allegedly, the altercation stemmed from a dispute over a girl, culminating tragically in the loss of a young life. However, amidst the confusion and conflicting accounts, Mimi Mpele remains resolute in her pursuit of truth.

She questions the narrative presented, doubting the validity of the ‘girlfriend’ explanation put forth by the suspect. Expressing disbelief, she emphasises her son’s amiable nature and refutes the notion that such a trivial dispute could lead to his demise.

“My son had many friends, including girls. I do not believe that he died because of an argument over a girl. That is just a made-up story, the boy must just tell the truth about why he killed my son. If they were fighting, why does he not have even the slightest of injuries?” she asked.

Furthermore, accounts from friends of the deceased shed light on a potential underlying tension, stemming from associations with rivals observed at a recent school soccer match. Mpele, grappling with the incomprehensible loss of her son, implores for honesty and accountability from the accused. She struggles to reconcile the betrayal of trust, given her son’s unwavering support for his long-time friend.

As Mpele navigates the unbearable grief of losing her son, she is confronted with the harsh reality of his absence, compounded by the responsibility of caring for his six-month-old child. In the pursuit of justice, she finds solace in the ongoing investigation by law enforcement into the tragic loss of her beloved son.

In the face of unimaginable loss, Mpele’s plea for truth and justice resonates deeply, echoing the sentiments of a community shattered by the senseless violence that has claimed a promising young life.

* The suspect appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on Monday and the case was postponed for further investigations, he remains behind bars.
