VANDERBIJLPARK – The banks of the Vaal River were recently transformed into a lively artistic haven as five talented artists fused to deliver an extraordinary art exhibition.
Known for hosting a range of social events, The Venue on Vaal had never seen anything quite like this before, as creative energy flooded the riverbanks with colour and design.
The stunning natural backdrop of the Vaal River added an extra layer of magic to the whole affair as dozens flocked to witness stunning pieces.

With the artwork set against the background of the flowing river, the exhibition felt like a harmonious blend of nature’s artistry and human innovation.
The quintet, comprised of Lara Pienaar, a graphic designer, and artist; Mark Shaun Hopkins, an innovative product designer and visual artist; Mark Swart, a full-time designer and sculptor; and Elli Wahl, a fine artist and photographer, brought their diverse crafts to life in a spectacular display.
For many Vaalies, the sight of the exhibition along the calm river was a breath of fresh air.

Art lovers and curious boat passersby alike flocked to the area to witness this unique blend.
The exhibition did not just showcase art, it brought people from all walks of life in a celebration of local talent and self-expression.
Speaking to Ster South on the sidelines, Pienaar told the paper how the idea was born.

“The exhibition was planned to be a solo one, hosted by myself. Since it’s my first, I decided to rope in prominent artists,” she said.
“The exhibition is a form of introduction, telling people or letting the world know who I am. Because I’m going through some things in life, this is also a way of expressing myself,” she added.
Touching on his involvement in the exhibition, Hopkins said “Because I come from the Vaal, I saw the need to jump in when the idea was introduced of exhibiting our product.”

“I’m super excited about the exhibition. The first person who walked in today was a 19-year-old artist who had all these sorts of questions and that made me see myself in him, which made me revisit the reason why I wanted to be part of this exhibition,” he said.
With Swart’s giant sculptures adding background beauty and colour on the lawns of the Venue on Vaal, the full-time designer explained his role.
“Art is one part of human life which has always been there since the beginning of time and will remain behind even when others are not around. I felt it would be nice to plow back for the community as I used to be based in the region for many years. Art is all about planting a seed,” he said.
Wahl said “It’s beautiful how all the works are intermingled and the venue is so beautiful. Everybody’s work is different but speak to each other.”
