Midvaal Local Municipality assures residents and stakeholders that it has fully implemented the Token Identifier (TID) Rollover. The Rollover is an industry-wide initiative to ensure that prepaid electricity meters are re-coded.
In a notice urging consumers to recode their meters, Eskom said meters that were not recoded would stop working after November 24.
“Meters still using Key Revision Number 1 (KRN1) will no longer accept electricity tokens after Sunday, 24 November 2024. This means that once your current credit is depleted, you will lose power, and the meter will become inoperable, necessitating a meter replacement that could cost up to R12 000.”
Midvaal said it implemented the rollover project in August 2023 and completed it in August 2024, finishing ahead of the scheduled November deadline.
“Midvaal spent over R13m to complete the project. The project scope entailed the conversion of 16 756 prepaid meters that were on KRN1 to KRN 2 to allow meters to be able to vend beyond the 24 November deadline and the replacement of non-compliant meters.”
Midvaal states that the TID rollover has significantly improved revenue collection for the municipality by relocating prepayment meters from customers’ premises to street-level pillar boxes or pole-top boxes.
“This change has reduced meter tampering and made meter audits more efficient, enhancing access for the municipality and strengthening revenue protection. The rollout has also helped the municipality by ensuring that all prepayment meters now reject tokens purchased from unauthorised vendors following the completion of rollover key changes.”
The municipality disclosed that its buying index has since increased from 85% to 90%.
“As a result of the municipality’s efficient and proactive planning, residents will not experience any disruptions or difficulties with their electricity tokens after the 24 November deadline.”
