DE DEUR – Lawlessness will not be allowed in the De Deur policing precinct. This was emphasised during the Safer Festive Operation Shanela which took place on December 5.
The operation which initiated with a parade on the R82 was carried out by Sedibeng District police together with Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Community Safety, Patrollers and the Community policing forum.
The operation, led by acting Sedibeng District Commissioner Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba, yielded success with more than 30 suspects being arrested during a roadblock that was carried out as well as tracing operations.
Speaking to Ster North, police spokesperson Constable Mampho Mahlomola said the objective of the operation was to curb crime and intensify visibility around De Deur policing area.
This includes the tracing of wanted suspects and enforcing compliance with liquor licensing regulations.
“34 undocumented individuals were detained pending legal proceedings. Should these undocumented individuals be found in violation of immigration laws, deportation procedures will be initiated.”
“19 traffic fines were issued and two suspects were arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes and two suspects arrested for selling liquor without a license.
Following the roadblock, a community engagement was held in Savannah City where residents voiced out their concerns about matters of law enforcement in the area.
The engagement was led by Brigadier Ndaba, flanked by the De Deur SAPS Acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Anver Hammond. Residents said their biggest issue was that of children going missing, doing drugs and being utterly disrespectful.
Residents asked that police change their attitudes and treat them with dignity when they go and open cases or ask for assistance at the De Deur police station.
Police responded by urging parents who are given problems by their children due to substance abuse to file protection orders and open cases.
The community was also advised to make use of other different government departments such as Department Social Development and the NGOs in the community so that they can get maximum assistance.
During this operation ATMs, shopping centres, hot spot areas and liquor outlets were visited and patrolled.
The community is advised against harbouring criminals in their community and to always report criminal activities to their nearest Police Station. Any person who may need police assistance may contact De Deur SAPS on 016 590 9200 / 08600 10111.
