Police clamp down on illicit cigarette operation in Elandsfontein

The six big boxes contained 50 cartons of cigarettes inside. There were also 28 empty packaging boxes found at the scene, allegedly being used to package the cigarettes.”
ELANDSFONTEIN – The Sedibeng Infrastructure Unit cracked down on an illicit cigarette operation.
This is after the unit was alerted of a truck offloading boxes suspected to contain illicit cigarettes at a plot in Elandsfontein.
Police spokesperson Constable Mampho Mahlomola reports that the unit in collaboration with the Gauteng Highway Patrol, and the Johannesburg and Vaal Rand DPCI proceeded to the plot.

“On arrival, the team found a group of African males, with others offloading boxes from the truck and others busy packaging. Realising that police were on their trail; the group of men fled the scene.”
Police gave chase and two Zimbabwean nationals were apprehended.

Mahlomola states that the estimated value of these cigarettes could amount to R200 000.
“A white truck and a white Hyundai Accent together with all the exhibits used in the commission of this crime were booked at De Deur SAPS for further investigation.”
De Deur SAPS Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Anver Hammond congratulated all the role players on a job well done.
