Alrinah Makgatha’s unforgettable journey to the UK

“This journey not only broadened my horizons but also deepened my appreciation for the interconnectedness of history, culture, and community,” she shared.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Bonolo Makgatha, a third-year student pursuing a Diploma in Internal Auditing at Vaal University of Technology (VUT), recently experienced an unforgettable journey to the United Kingdom (UK) as part of the Abe Bailey Trust 2024 educational programme.

Her adventure began in Cape Town with a reflective orientation, featuring a hike up Silvermine Mountain, a visit to Sir Abe Bailey’s grave, and a trip to Robben Island.

A farewell dinner with past scholars and trustees set the tone for the journey ahead.

In London, unforeseen challenges tested her resilience, including baggage delays and a canceled return flight.

Yet, these hurdles did not overshadow the enriching experiences. Highlights included attending the Changing of the Guard ceremony, visiting the House of Parliament, and having lunch with esteemed judges and justices.

Beyond London, Alrinah explored iconic universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, and Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. She experienced historic traditions, like punting in Cambridge and touring St Andrews University in Scotland. Visits to landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Observatory deepened her appreciation for the UK’s blend of history and modernity.

Alrinah was inspired by the UK’s efficient public transport system and inclusivity, particularly the support for international students. Cultural highlights such as the safety of walking at night and historic preservation impressed her deeply.

Reflecting on her journey, Alrinah noted the importance of adaptability, professionalism, and embracing challenges. “This journey not only broadened my horizons but also deepened my appreciation for the interconnectedness of history, culture, and community,” she shared.

Her UK experience is a testament to the transformative power of education, exploration, and perseverance.
