VANDERBIJLPARK – Another week, another drama for Emfuleni Local Municipality.
This comes after the embattled municipality has warned job seekers against a fraudulent job listing for an admin clerk.
According to job seekers, the fake ad details job requirements and mentions earnings of up to R20 000 a month.
Following the application, ‘shortlisted’ applicants receive an SMS from fraudsters who then ask for R1 000 in cash to register the successful applicant with a medical aid provider.
One applicant made a follow-up after the SMS and contacted the provided number.
“When I spoke to the person, who told me he is a coordinator, he sounded legit throughout the call. He told me that I was shortlisted for the position. He then asked for money, which made me skeptical of the legitimacy of the post,” she said.
In a statement, municipality spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni said, “The Emfuleni Local Municipality has been notified of a fraudulent job advertisement falsely claiming to offer ‘Admin Clerk’ employment opportunities in the municipality. These counterfeit job opportunities shared via social media platforms have created confusion for job seekers.”
“ELM does not request payments nor use social media for recruitment. Avoid scams and verify vacancies only via our official website: www. emfuleni.gov.za,” he said.
