Human Rights Commission asked to intervene in service delivery failures

Speaking to Ster North, Chabalala said the action to approach the SAHRC pertains to Emfuleni's failure to provide essential services such as clean water, adequate sanitation, and effective sewage management.

The DA Emfuleni North Constituency Head, Kingsol Chabalala MPL, will file a complaint against the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). Chabalala has been at the forefront in fighting for better services for the people living in the ELM.

Speaking to Ster North, Chabalala said the action to approach the SAHRC pertains to Emfuleni’s failure to provide essential services such as clean water, adequate sanitation, and effective sewage management.

“This neglect has resulted in communities living in squalor and at risk of health issues. The DA has consistently raised concerns regarding Emfuleni’s inability to deliver essential services. Unfortunately, our calls for action have fallen on deaf ears from Emfuleni and the Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), which is tasked with holding this municipality accountable.”

According to Chabalala, ELM residents deserve better. “The current government has short-changed our people. It is enshrined in our constitution that the government should render adequate basic services and treat people with dignity. I am approaching SAHRC because I believe that their intervention will ensure that the ELM does not continue to violate the rights of residents.”

Chabalala said the municipality needs to be saved. During his visit on 8 May, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi lambasted ELM mayor Sipho Radebe for the poor state of ELM. Lesufi urged Radebe and his management to do better in order to give ELM residents the dignity they deserve.
