Barrage SAPS hosts career day at Ramosukula High School

“Many of these kids end up doing crime because of a lack of opportunities and because they are idling after leaving high school. The expo is to expand their knowledge and expose them to different and fascinating job opportunities and fields of study,” she added.

BARRAGE – Pupils at Ramosukula Secondary School were spoiled for choice on June 24, when more than 10 stakeholders graced their school to showcase different career opportunities during a Career Exhibition Event.

Dozens gathered to listen to speakers from various institutions of higher learning and representatives from prominent companies and organisations, who provided a valuable platform for exploring multiple career opportunities.

The event was attended by two credible universities in the Vaal region, Vaal University of Technology and North-West University.

Several colleges, such as Boston College, Richfield College, Rosebank College, among many others, also played a huge role in imparting pupils with knowledge on different courses.

Representatives from giant banks such as First National Bank and Standard Bank also shared knowledge on banking education and opportunities in their departments.

The highlight of the expo was a showcase by different police units, such as Forensics Pathology, Mounted and Waterwing units, who demonstrated their fascinating tools of trade in and outside the school.

Speaking to Ster on the sidelines of the event, Barrage Police spokesperson Sergeant Sophia Gaboutlwelwe explained the reason behind the well-organised expo.

“We took advantage of youth month to bring this expo to the pupils of this farm school. We’ve realised as a station that pupils from many of our schools in our precinct don’t further their studies after completing their matric, which is a unfortunate to witness,” she said.

Gaboutlwelwe said an idling mind leads to no good, hence the importance of motivating youngsters.

“Many of these kids end up doing crime because of a lack of opportunities and because they are idling after leaving high school. The expo is to expand their knowledge and expose them to different and fascinating job opportunities and fields of study,” she added.

Gaboutlwelwe said the event was a success.

“We’ve seen different units from our side being part of the event, exposing these pupils to jobs under SAPS. Also, dozens of higher learning institutions formed part and broadened the pupils’ mindsets on different careers and opportunities that lie ahead. This was a fruitful event, and I hope it bred a positive mindset,” she said.

Deputy Principal at the school, Nthabiseng Lice praised the event for its impact on learners.
