MIDVAAL – To ensure the high quality of water being distributed to residents, Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) has invested R1.2m in the installation of an Automated Chlorine Dosing System at the Meyerton Reservoir, which supplies water to over 80% of the Midvaal areas.
Calling this an imperative move, the municipality says that adding an extra layer of protection as the first line of defense against microbial contamination in the distribution system will reduce the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks such as cholera.
According to MLM, the Chlorine Dosing System continuously monitors and analyses the residual chlorine levels in the water.
“Based on real-time data, it automatically adjusts and doses the necessary amount of chlorine to maintain safe levels at the point of consumption. This innovation not only helps Midvaal maintain compliance with South African National Standards for potable water, but also ensures cost-effectiveness, as chlorine is both affordable and easy to store and manage.”
Additionally, the system protects municipal infrastructure by limiting dilapidation within pipelines, ultimately extending the lifespan of the distribution network.
Through this investment, MLM reaffirms its commitment to providing safe drinking water and safeguarding the health and well-being of residents, adding that it has taken proactive measures to protect residents and ensure that tap water remains safe and drinkable.
