VANDERBIJLPARK – Despite mixed reactions from residents, the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) says the controversial BXCSA smart meter installation programme is full steam ahead.
Following what officials call “extensive consultations” with local communities, ward committees, and resident associations, the MMC for Public Works, Tumi Mochawe, confirmed that the rollout will continue in Vanderbijlpark and later expand to other areas across the Vaal.
In a statement issued to the media, Mochawe “I call upon all residents to cooperate fully with the installation teams and to make use of the available communication channels for any queries or concerns. Together, we can ensure a smooth transition to a smarter, more reliable electricity system that benefits all.”
While the rollout continues, Mochawe said a 30-day investigation into consumer complaints aimed to probe a series of issues raised by residents, including billing disputes, installation irregularities, and the reliability of the new smart meters, gets underway.
“After a thorough 30-day review process addressing community concerns and technical queries, ELM, in partnership with Eskom and BXC South Africa, is confident that the installation programme remains a vital part of our ongoing energy management and modernisation strategy.”
“Our Electricity Department and Eskom have been tasked with leading the investigation that started on October 17. The findings and recommendations will then be submitted to the ELM legal department within 30 days for review and public disclosure,” he said.
While pending the outcome of the probe, the smart meter rollout will be extended to consumers in CW5, CW4, Miami Sands, Powerville Park, Parts of Boipatong, Peacehaven, Vereeniging, and Sebokeng Hostel.
Mochawe encouraged consumers to cooperate fully with the installation teams.
“Smart meters are a key part of modernising our grid and improving service reliability. Installation efforts continue across Vanderbijlpark, with both ELM and BXCSA prepared to address any consumer concerns,” he said.
