SEDIBENG – What started as a booze spree in a local tavern in Orange Farm turned into a deadly confrontation in the wee hours of November 1.
According to a police spokesperson, an argument over missing beers ensued and ended in bloodshed.
This comes after a 26-year-old man allegedly stabbed his friend in the chest with an okapi.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Sergeant Shaan Motsapi confirmed that the incident took place around 00:15 in Extension 1.
Motsapi said their officers were called to Baragwanath Hospital after the victim was rushed there from Stretford Clinic with a fatal stab wound.
“It is alleged that three friends were drinking together at a nearby tavern. The deceased and another friend left their beers with the suspect and went out briefly. When they returned, both the suspect and the beers were gone,” said Motsapi.
The two men then went on a search for the suspect who vanished into the night.
“They met him on the street, and he claimed to have left the beers with someone else. On their way to find the said person, an argument broke out. The suspect ran to his grandmother’s house and returned armed with an okapi,” he said.
Motsapi said during the confrontation, the suspect stabbed the deceased in the chest. Police investigations quickly led to the suspect’s arrest.
The okapi knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered and seized as evidence. Sergeant Motsapi confirmed that a murder docket has been opened.
“The 26-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court soon, facing a charge of murder,” he said.
