Midvaal investment boosts informal traders

Municipality strengthens commitment to creating a conducive environment for thriving informal businesses.

In efforts to empower informal traders and restore dignity to their daily operations, Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) has invested more than R8m in the construction of new trading stalls.

The project provides 34 new trading stalls, an ablution block, and an administrative office. Each stall features access to water and electricity, along with secure locks, ensuring traders can protect their goods after hours and work under improved conditions.

MLM’s Idah Satikhe explains that the construction of the stalls will significantly improve the trading environment in the CBD.

“For years, informal traders operated under harsh conditions without permanent structures, leaving them vulnerable to weather conditions that often forced them to close down, often resulting in loss of income.”

The municipality emphasises that informal traders play a crucial role in the economy, as they not only generate income for their owners but also create employment opportunities.

MLM commits to supporting this sector to ensure that the informal traders operate in a conducive environment, enabling them to thrive.
