SASOLBURG – The Sukhari family has called for justice after losing four loved ones a tragic accident on the R59 near Vaalpark.
On October 20, the lives of Rajkaran ‘Smiley’ Sukhari, his wife Shanitha, and their two daughters, Trisha and Nicole, were cut short in a fatal multi-vehicle accident when a white bakkie struck their vehicle head-on.
The Sukhari family had visited friends and delivered sweetmeats while celebrating Diwali.

A video taken by a couple travelling on the same road captured a white bakkie driven by a male, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, driving recklessly and endangering the lives of others.
The footage shows the driver veering into oncoming traffic multiple times, moving off and back onto the road repeatedly.
Family spokesperson Vinesh Sukhari said the couple alerted both the SAPS and the Sasolburg Traffic Police.

“Unfortunately, no response or intervention followed. Shortly thereafter, the driver of the white bakkie made a U-turn and travelled back toward Sasolburg, where he collided head-on with my brother’s vehicle.
The impact was catastrophic, killing Smiley, Shanitha, and Trisha instantly. Nicole was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition, where she fought for her life for five days before succumbing to her injuries,” he said.
Vinesh added that the most devastating part of this tragedy was how the family learned of it.
“News of the accident only reached us the following day, around 15:00, through Facebook. Initial reports were unclear and confusing, and as details emerged, our worst fears were confirmed.”
Vinesh described the days that followed as filled with unbearable pain and logistical challenges.
“From identifying the bodies and obtaining identity documents to co-ordinating funeral arrangements, all while praying for Nicole’s recovery in hospital,” he said.
As preparations were finalised for three funerals on October 26, Nicole passed away on the morning of October 25, forcing the family to prepare for four funerals simultaneously.
“This devastating event was entirely preventable. It was caused by an intoxicated driver who had no regard for human life and by the failure of authorities to act despite a clear warning and evidence of danger. Our family is shattered, and we continue to seek answers and justice for Smiley, Shanitha, Trisha, and Nicole,” he said.
Vinesh added that the incident highlights the urgent need for stronger enforcement of drunk driving laws, improved police response, and public awareness around road safety.
“No other family should ever have to endure what we have.”
The Sukhari family is calling for a full and transparent investigation, including a review of police response protocols and stronger measures against drunk driving.
“Justice must be served, and their deaths must not be in vain.”
