Christmas comes early for NWU Protection Services staff

Gesture of appreciation uplifts security officers who keep the campus safe day and night

VANDERBIJLPARK – Christmas arrived a little early for the Protection Services staff at NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus, bringing more than just warm drinks, but warm hearts as well. In a heartfelt show of appreciation, the university’s administration staff recently handed over a coffee machine and other essential items through the Coffee Station Drive to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the campus security guards who serve tirelessly behind the scenes.

For many guards, long shifts, cold nights and constant alertness are part of everyday life. The donation was therefore not just a gift, but a recognition of the silent sacrifices made to ensure the safety of staff, students, properties and visitors on campus.

Speaking on behalf of the administration team, spokesperson Pola Mmapulana said the initiative was inspired by a desire to say thank you in a meaningful way.

“Our security personnel are often the first to arrive on campus and the last to leave. They perform their duties with a smile and respect. They work through difficult conditions, weekends and holidays to make sure this university is safe. This drive is our small way of showing our deep appreciation and reminding them that they truly matter.”

He further called on other staff members to support and sustain the initiative by contributing to the coffee station. He added that a simple cup of coffee during a long night shift could lift spirits and offer comfort.

“Sometimes appreciation does not have to be expensive to be meaningful. A cup of coffee can restore energy, encourage conversation and remind someone that they are seen and valued. That is what this Coffee Station Drive is all about.”

Head of Protection Services Joseph Mtlanti said the department was deeply moved by the gesture.

“We are truly touched. It shows us that our work is recognised and appreciated. Often, security officers work quietly behind the scenes, but today we feel seen and valued. This has really uplifted the entire team.”

He added that the donation would go a long way in boosting morale within the department.

“A simple gesture like this strengthens our spirit and motivates us even more to serve this campus with pride and commitment. When people appreciate your work, it gives you the energy to continue doing your best,” he said.
