VANDERBIJLPARK.- Work has officially begun to restore electricity to parts of town following a major fire at the Curie Boulevard sub-station on Sunday evening.
The blaze left several areas in total darkness, including Bonanne, Stephanopark, Bophelong, and various blocks in NW 7 and CW 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6.
After a full investigation on Monday, technicians discovered that the damage was severe. A large 30 MVA transformer and several essential cables were burnt beyond repair and must be replaced.
On Tuesday, Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni confirmed that repairs have started.
“ELM and Eskom technicians have finished routine tests on the 30 MVA replacement power transformer, confirming it is in a good working condition. Installation of a new 88kV High Voltage Breaker is currently underway and is almost finished, provided that all goes accordingly. Technicians will commence with cabling immediately after the cables are delivered to the site,” he said.
Sangweni added that the technicians have completed the installation of the Distribution Board (DB) and cabling for the 88kV control room.
The municipality has asked residents for their continued patience while teams work around the clock.
“It is all hands on deck to speed up the restoration of power supply. We apologise for the inconvenience,” said Sangweni.
