Man killed in botched robbery

Police are investigating a murder case after a man died in hospital following a botched robbery in Marikana.

VANDERBIJLPARK – A man has died following a robbery in the Marikana informal settlement.

The victim was reportedly beaten with a stick during the attack and passed away in the hospital days later. The incident took place around midday on February 19.

According to police, the victim was walking along Dube Street with his cousin and friends when they were confronted by four armed men.

Vanderbijlpark spokesperson Sabelo Sigcu confirmed that the group was accosted by the suspects. Three of the attackers were armed with knives, while the fourth carried a stick.

The suspects attempted to rob the group of their belongings.

The victim’s cousin and friends managed to escape the scene unharmed. The victim was assaulted with the stick during the struggle. Although the man managed to walk home after the assault, his condition worsened.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance but succumbed to his injuries on February 23. Police have now upgraded the investigation.
