Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni districts honour senior citizens

Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni districts hosted an elderly community engagement in Thokoza, addressing safety, service delivery challenges, corruption concerns, and strengthening ties between senior citizens and law enforcement.

The Sam Ntuli Sports Ground in Thokoza was abuzz with activity as the Sedibeng District, in conjunction with the Ekurhuleni District, held the annual elderly community engagement on February 25.

The event was led by the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, joined by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Fred Kekana, Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, Sedibeng District Commissioner, Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, MMC for Public Safety, Councillor Mzayifani Ngwenya, and representatives from various departments.

Last year, the event saw a successful instalment when scores of residents from the Ekurhuleni District filled the Meyerton Town Hall. On Wednesday, residents hailing from various parts of Sedibeng, including Sharpeville, Boipatong, Heidelberg, Evaton, and Orange Farm, joined elderly groups from Ekurhuleni for a day of unity, interaction, and shared meals. The group included several SAPS veterans from the district.

The event is an opportunity for leaders to engage elderly citizens on critical issues affecting their lives and communities.

During the engagement session, elderly community members raised concerns about poor service delivery at clinics, lawlessness in communities, and allegations of corruption. Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni reassured the elderly that they are an important part of the community, stating that their issues would be dealt with. Stakeholders from various departments also took their time to respond to queries relating to their field of expertise.

Speaking to Ster North, police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela says the event was filled with joy and appreciation as the elderly were celebrated and recognised for their invaluable role in society.

“The engagement also served as an educational awareness platform, empowering senior citizens with information related to safety, service delivery, and their rights.”

The SAPS Inspectorate was also in attendance to handle and follow up on complaints lodged against police officials, including unresolved cases, ensuring accountability and transparency.

In her vote of thanks, Major General Mukwevho emphasised that senior citizens form part of society’s most vulnerable groups and must be protected, respected, and cared for at all times. She reiterated SAPS’ commitment to ensuring their safety and dignity.

The event concluded on a positive note, fostering strengthened relations between law enforcement, government departments, and the elderly community.
