Elderly residents warned against online scams in Meyerton

Sedibeng District Police hosted an elderly engagement in Meyerton as part of Operation Shanela, educating senior citizens about online scams, banking fraud, and cellphone security while encouraging them to report suspicious activities.

MEYERTON – The Sedibeng District Police, as part of Operation Shanela, hosted an Elderly Engagement with a cop outreach programme at Lion’s Creek recently.

The community safety session focused on protecting senior citizens from online crime, particularly scams and fraud linked to online shopping, banking transactions, card misuse, and cellphone and SIM card security.

The programme aimed to empower elderly residents with knowledge on how to identify suspicious activities and report potential criminal behaviour.

District Commissioner Nkhensani Mukhwevho attended the engagement following an invitation from the Meyerton elderly community.

Station Commanders from across the district were also present. Key stakeholders, including representatives from Absa Bank Limited and Vodacom Group Limited, provided information on financial and digital safety.

The session formed part of broader community safety initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable residents in the Sedibeng District Municipality area.

Organisers said the outreach programme was designed to strengthen community awareness and help vulnerable residents protect themselves against cybercrime and financial exploitation.
