Easter weekend operations net 200 suspects

Operation Paseka combined detective work, roadblocks, and compliance inspections to boost safety and curb crime across the district.

Police in Sedibeng District arrested 200 suspects during a high-impact operation, Operation Paseka, conducted in collaboration with multiple units from April 3 to 5.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, police spokesperson Sergeant Tintswalo Ndhambi says more boots on the ground across various policing precincts contributed to the success.

“The collaborative efforts of all participating units yielded significant results, culminating in the arrest of 200 suspects for various criminal offences including: assault GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm), common assault, contravention of protection orders, driving under the influence of alcohol, fraud, housebreaking and theft, illegal immigration, intimidation, malicious damage to property, possession of drugs, possession of stolen property, rape, robbery, selling liquor without a valid liquor license and theft.”

Ndhambi explains that before the main operational deployments, detectives across the district played a critical role in tracing and arresting wanted suspects, including those linked to gender-based violence-related cases.

“During the operation, a strong focus was placed on visible policing through stop-and-search, vehicle checkpoints, and high-density patrols in identified crime hotspots. Strategic roadblocks were conducted along major routes, contributing to the arrest of undocumented foreign nationals and offenders involved in various criminal activities.”

Law enforcement officials conducted extensive searches of persons and vehicles. Furthermore, they enforced compliance inspections at identified premises such as liquor outlets, taxi ranks, and other high-risk areas. These efforts further contributed to arrests related to drug possession and liquor law contraventions.

Traffic law enforcement operations were also intensified, with officers issuing fines for various traffic violations and ensuring compliance with road safety regulations.

This large-scale operation is part of ongoing efforts to enhance police visibility, improve community safety, and combat crime through coordinated, multi-disciplinary law enforcement actions.

The District Commissioner, Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, expressed her appreciation to all SAPS members, stakeholders, and community patrollers for their continued dedication and commitment in the fight against crime.
