ZAMDELA – A Zamdela rapist who attacked a mentally challenged 14-year-old girl twice has been jailed for 24 years. The Sasolburg Regional Court convicted and sentenced Godfrey Mokoena (25) on May 4.
According to Fezile Dabi Police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani, the attack took place at around 12:00 on July 28, 2021, while the victim was at a tuckshop near her home.
“The victim met the accused, whom she knew as Godfrey. He forcefully grabbed her by the hand and instructed her to accompany him to his place of residence,” said Rani.
Instead, the accused first took the girl to a nearby park and raped her inside an abandoned container. He then took her to his house and raped her a second time. Afterwards, he threatened the victim and told her not to tell anyone what had happened. He went into hiding but was traced and arrested on August 9, 2021.
Detective Constable Thandeka Mkwanazi from the Zamdela Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit investigated the case. During the investigation, it was confirmed that the victim is mentally challenged.
Rani said that Mkwanazi’s dedicated investigative work and commitment to justice ensured the successful prosecution and conviction of the attacker.
As part of the sentence, the Sasolburg Regional Court also declared Mokoena unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his details be entered into the National Sexual Offenders Register.
