DENEYSVILLE – A 53-year-old man is behind bars after he was arrested on May 21 at Groenpunt Correctional Centre, allegedly trying to smuggle drugs.
According to police reports, members of the Deneysville SAPS received a tip-off regarding a visitor allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs and cellular devices into the facility.
Police were dispatched to the facility, and upon arrival, they consulted with correctional officials conducting routine searches at Gate No. 2.
In a statement, Fezile Dabi District Police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani said, “During the initial search of the suspect’s belongings, officials discovered two cellular phones and chargers. A more thorough search was conducted in the presence of correctional officials and additional items that were concealed on the suspect were revealed.”
“The seized items included packets of suspected dagga, several small packets suspected to contain nyaope, suspected crystal methamphetamine, additional cellular phones and chargers, and loose cigarettes,” she said.
Rani said the suspect was taken into custody and charged accordingly.
“The man is expected to appear before the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court on May 24, on charges of possession of drugs.”
