Police call for the preservation of children’s rights

Sedibeng police and community organisations reached 130 youngsters during Child Protection Week campaigns in De Deur and Sharpeville, promoting child safety, children's rights, and positive decision-making.

The police in the Sedibeng District have been actively running safety campaigns to mark Child Protection Week. In De Deur, local officers partnered with the Vereeniging FCS Unit and AGAPE to visit TebohongTebohong Daycare & Preschool on June 3.

Police spokesperson Constable Mapho Mahlomola said officers spoke with the young children to teach them how to stay safe, recognise crimes against children, and report any mistreatment.

Mahlomola emphasised that child safety is a top priority for the SAPS, calling on parents to closely monitor their children’s behaviour for any signs of distress. He noted that 40 pupils were reached during this event, adding that raising children with care is vital for protecting the future of the community.

Meanwhile, a separate campaign took place in Sharpeville on May 31 at the Tshepiso Sports Centre, drawing support from various community organisations, including the local police, CPF, Youth Desk, Indibano, Vaal Community in Action, Lekoa FM, MAPS, and NICRO.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela explained that this initiative focused specifically on empowering young boys.

The session educated 90 participants on the dangers of gang involvement, bullying, and substance abuse, whilst also highlighting the importance of children’s rights.

Through interactive discussions and motivational talks, stakeholders encouraged responsible decision-making and character building, concluding the day by presenting gifts to all the boys in attendance.
