Lesufi warns against violence ahead of immigration protest
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has raised concerns over growing tensions ahead of the June 30 anti-illegal immigration protest, as authorities activate nationwide security plans to maintain public order and prevent violence.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has expressed serious concern over rising tensions as a protest against illegal immigration, planned for June 30, draws closer.
Speaking in a video statement on Monday evening, Lesufi noted that Gauteng will be directly affected by the demonstration because the province is home to many immigrants and is expected to be one of the protest hotspots.
“Firstly, I want to be clear, we fully support the right to peaceful protest. It’s a cornerstone of our democracy, and it’s also enshrined in the Constitution. We share the protestors’ concerns about illegal immigration. We are pleased that President Cyril Ramaphosa has implemented measures to address this issue,” he said.
To ensure public safety, the provincial government is working closely with law enforcement agencies.
Lesufi reassured residents that plans are in place to handle the situation within the law, with zero tolerance for violence. He also urged citizens to remain calm, obey the law, and allow the police to do their jobs, promising that the government is fully committed to protecting all people and property in the province.
Meanwhile, the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure is monitoring the situation daily to spot early risks. Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili confirmed that an integrated operational plan has been activated across all provinces.
“Our integrated operational plan has been activated across all provinces. It brings together the SAPS, the South African National Defence Force, Metro Police Departments, Traffic Law Enforcement, Disaster Management structures, and other relevant departments to ensure a co-ordinated government response. The operational focus is to protect lives, safeguard critical infrastructure, maintain the free movement of people and goods, preserve public order, and ensure that all communities remain safe.”
