VREDEFORT – A heated argument, reportedly over a cigarette, led to tragedy after a 32-year-old man was arrested for the murder of his 61-year-old father.
The shocking incident took place in the Mapetla Section of Mokwallo on Sunday afternoon.
According to Fezile Dabi District Police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani, officers responded to an assault complaint at about 16:10.
“Upon arrival, officers found the 61-year-old victim, identified as Ndode Lenong, lying on a bed with head injuries and a swollen face. Police were informed that the deceased and his son argued over a cigarette before the assault, allegedly by his son, using an unknown weapon,” she said.
Lenong was quickly taken to Parys Hospital before being moved to a hospital in Bloemfontein for further treatment.
“Despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning,” Rani said.
Police arrested the 32-year-old suspect at his home and charged him with murder.
He is due to appear in the Vredefort Magistrate’s Court, while police investigations into the incident continue.
