BOPHELONG – Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Hassan Mako has condemned the alleged gang war in Bophelong that left a trail of bloodshed and destruction over the weekend.

The violence reportedly saw a house torched, while several people were allegedly murdered amid clashes involving graduates of initiation schools.

In a statement issued by Mako’s office, the mayor expressed deep concern over reports of ordinary residents allegedly being attacked by initiation graduates, as well as violence between rival groups of initiates.

He described the reported incidents as a serious threat to the community and a blatant disregard for the cultural values and traditions associated with initiation.

The mayor’s spokesperson, Mphikeleli Msibi, said Mako has called for an urgent response from law enforcement agencies.

“The mayor expressed profound dismay regarding the recent reports concerning initiates within our municipality, characterising it as a blatant disregard for our cultural heritage and traditions,” said Msibi.

Msibi added that Mako had urged police and other law enforcement agencies to treat the incidents as criminal matters and ensure that those responsible face prosecution.

Mako also appealed directly to recent initiation graduates to think carefully about their conduct and the consequences of their actions.

“I urge all recent graduates to exercise prudence in their decisions, as these may significantly influence their future endeavours and potential for success,” said Mako.

He further called on parents to play an active role in guiding their children and encouraging them to uphold the principles of Ubuntu in their communities.

The mayor’s comments come as tensions remain high in Bophelong following the violent incidents, with residents left shaken by the latest outbreak of alleged gang-related violence.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said three counts of murder and arson are under investigation.
