Hospice needs your help to keep doors open

Wide Horizon Hospice CEO Tersia Burger has appealed to the Sedibeng community, businesses and donors for support.

Wide Horizon Hospice CEO Tersia Burger has once again asked the Sedibeng community to rally behind the facility, citing that they currently don’t receive government funding. Burger said the support of the community, businesses and donors is essential to keeping its doors open.

During an interview with Darryl Grant on Vaal FM 90.6, she spoke about the hospice’s recent acquisition by Stepping Stone Hospice and the new opportunities this will create for patients and families across the region.

The community is urged to get to know the hospice and understand that palliative care is not about giving up, but about living, caring and supporting patients and families through every stage of a difficult journey.

Burger appealed to the community to kindly support the hospice through financial contributions, sponsorships and in-kind donations.

“There is a common perception that hospice is only for people in the final days of their lives. Palliative care can begin at the point of diagnosis, supporting patients and families throughout their journey. Patients can move in and out of the programme as their treatment, condition and remission status change,” she said.

She reiterated that Wide Horizon is more than a medical facility; they provide care, dignity, comfort and emotional support while helping families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments. She stressed that no patient will be turned away because they cannot afford care.

“Palliative care is special care for someone with a serious illness. It focuses on making the person as comfortable as possible, easing pain and other difficult symptoms while also caring for their emotional and family needs. The goal is to help someone live as well as possible, for as long as possible, with dignity,” said Burger.

“Wide Horizon’s doors are open to patients, families, caregivers, referral partners, volunteers, businesses and donors who want to learn more about the role of hospice in the community.

Members of the community wishing to assist may contact the hospice directly for more information on 016 428 1410 or via email at fundraising@hospicevaal.co.za.

“Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small, helps make a difference,” Burger said.
