Eight pupils involved in scholar transport accident

One learner lost their life while three others are hospitalized and four sustained minor injuries.

SEBOKENG – One of eight pupils from Dinokaneng Secondary School who were involved in a scholar transport accident on Wednesday has died.

According to The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesman Steve Mabona, three other learners were hospitalized while four sustained minor injuries.

“The department regrets to inform that eight learners from Dinokaneng were involved in a scholar transport accident on Wednesday, 7 September 2022, in which one (1) learner died,” he said.

According to Mabona, the incident allegedly occurred by the hostel pickup point in Sebokeng.

“The learners were reportedly hit by a scholar transport bus at the pickup point while boarding to get to school.

Information at our disposal confirms that the learners were rushed to a local medical facility. One learner succumbed to injuries while receiving medical attention, and three learners were hospitalized due to the severity of their injuries,” he said.

Police have launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding the accident and Psycho-Social Team has been dispatched to the school for necessary support.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi conveyed his condolences to the affected family.

“We wish to convey our sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased and the school community at large. We wish the learners affected by this incident a speedy recovery,” he said.
