Theft and vandalism of sewer manholes on the rise

“Such actions will result in more frequent blockages within our sewage network and pose a significant risk to children, who might encounter these open manholes and fall in.”

MIDVAAL. – Thieves have resorted to stealing and vandalising manhole covers from sewage pipelines in Savannah City.

In a statement Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) said the perpetrators have been breaking the covers to access steel, which poses a significant risk to the municipal sewage system.

“Municipal employees witnessed unknown suspects removing manhole covers from sewage pipelines on November 8, a concerning trend that threatens the integrity of our infrastructure,” MLM’s Acting Municipal Manager, Zakhele Mhlongo said.

“Such actions will result in more frequent blockages within our sewage network and pose a significant risk to children, who might encounter these open manholes and fall in.”

Mhlongo said to address this issue effectively, the municipality urges residents to report any instances of theft or vandalism to the police and public safety authorities.

“It is crucial that we hold these offenders accountable for their actions.”

We appeal to our community to collaborate closely with us in safeguarding our infrastructure against such destructive behaviour. Your assistance in this matter is invaluable.”
