ELM dismisses cholera outbreak reports as fake

Residents who have concerns about their health due to the voice note in question are urged to visit their nearest public health facility for a checkup.

VANDERBIJLPARK .- The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) has refuted rumors and unfounded reports about a cholera outbreak in the area.

In a voice note circulated on social media, the messenger alleges that ELM tap water is not safe for human consumption and that residents must boil it before drinking.

“We unreservedly dismiss these cholera outbreak reports as fake news aimed at causing needless panic in Emfuleni,” ELM’s spokesperson, Makhosonke Sangweni said in a statement.

“Furthermore, it important to note that the municipality, through its water and sanitation services unit Metsi-a-Lekoa, takes 20 water samples at various points across the network for laboratory testing each month.

We can confirm that our water supply network tested negative for cholera. This means that all the water samples are compliant with the South African National Standards (SANS) 241 Drinking Water Specifications.”

Residents who have concerns about their health due to the voice note in question are urged to visit their nearest public health facility for a checkup.

“ELM strongly condemns these reports for they don’t have no scientific proof,” states Sangweni.
