Rubbish only removed every 14 days in Vanderbijlpark

"The FF Plus warned the Emfuleni municipality to stop the mismanagement. The lack of garbage disposal causes a health risk for residents and leads to an infestation of rats and cockroaches".

The Emfuleni local municipality’s service delivery has deteriorated to such an extent that garbage collection in Vanderbijlpark will currently only take place every second week.

Councilor Piet Smith of the FF Plus in Emfuleni explained that Emfuleni currently only has three garbage disposal trucks available to serve an area of 966km2.

In reality, 21 trucks are required to remove the household waste weekly.

“The 18 unavailable garbage disposal trucks are either broken down or contractors have stopped repairs due to unpaid bills.

“Residents of Vanderbijlpark have to drive 30km outside the town to drop off rubbish at an authorized landfill.

“People have been attacked there in the past, which makes it dangerous to visit the site,” says Smith.

To make matters worse, taxpayers in residential areas with a collection rate of 100% have also joined the Emfuleni Taxpayers Association and are withholding their service fees.

“The FF Plus cannot blame taxpayers for the drastic step, but it further impoverishes the municipality,” explains Smith.

For some time now, many residents have been forced to make use of small businesses to remove rubbish. More will probably have to follow this route now.

“Garbage is also dumped along roads and open fields after which it is set on fire. It obstructs the view and poses a danger to motorists,” says Smith.

“The FF Plus warned the Emfuleni municipality to stop the mismanagement. The lack of garbage disposal causes a health risk for residents and leads to an infestation of rats and cockroaches.

“It is time to get rid of the ANC in Gauteng in the upcoming election and replace it with a coalition government of which the FF Plus is a part,” concludes Smith down.
