Lebalele organisation fights hunger in Riverdale
With aspirations to expand their reach into neighbouring regions, they aim to secure additional funding.
SEDIBENG. – In commemoration of Youth Day, the Libalele Malatha Health and Community Organization hosted a lively sports event aimed at engaging children in the spirit of Youth Day celebrations. Held on June 16, at Riverdale in Meyerton, the event served to unite communities and support underprivileged youth.
The primary objective was to educate young people about South Africa’s history of freedom, emphasizing the sacrifices made by courageous young activists. It was a poignant reminder to honor those who fought for rights and freedom. Established in 2017 by Sibongile Dlamini, the Libalele Malatha Health and Community Organization addresses social challenges within their community, including behavioral issues among youth and adults in Riverdale and surrounding informal settlements.
With aspirations to expand their reach into neighboring regions, they aim to secure additional funding. The event featured motivational speakers who encouraged youth to persevere despite challenges, highlighting prevalent issues such as teenage pregnancy, school dropout rates, and substance abuse. The organization serves as a guiding force, focusing on education, empowerment, and awareness through various programmes and capacity[1]building initiatives.

The organization provides essential services to the community, including a weekly feeding scheme for both Muslim and non-Muslim residents, food hampers for the needy, skills workshops for unemployed caregivers, aftercare for disadvantaged individuals, fundraising events, and religious education for Muslims and converts. They also offer counselling services for victims of rape, sexual abuse, trauma, and grief.
Dlamini emphasised their partnerships with various departments to ensure that referral cases receive professional attention. They provide ongoing support to senior citizens with meals, basic necessities, and social activities, aiming to alleviate their burdens. In tribute to the brave youth of 16th June 1976, attendees wore school uniforms, symbolizing the historical significance of the day.
The youth enjoyed activities and meals prepared during the event, and were provided with clothing and food parcels to take home. The organization continues to seek sponsors and donations to support their initiatives, ensuring the welfare of children and the elderly in need.
