Emfuleni brings dignity to informal settlements’ sanitation
“This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing public health and ensuring dignified living conditions for 1086 beneficiaries."
VANDERBIJLPARK. – The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) launched an innovative Alternative Sanitation Project (ASP) at the Chris Hani Informal Settlement in Bophelong’s Ward 23 and Ward 7 recently.
The municipality said the project is aimed at improving sanitation facilities for residents in informal settlements. The initiative was led by the acting Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlement, Hassan Mako, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Human Settlement.
“This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing public health and ensuring dignified living conditions for 1086 beneficiaries. The pioneering project marks a pivotal moment for informal settlement communities as the municipality introduces sustainable sanitation solutions designed specifically for diverse community needs. This project reflects our commitment to government inclusivity and public health, ending the cycle of inadequate sanitation that has long affected vulnerable Informal settlement dwellers,” the ELM said.
The ASP focuses on providing cost-effective, user-friendly sanitation facilities that are environmentally sustainable and culturally acceptable.
Among other key features, the Alternative Sanitation Project boasts:
– Eco-Friendly Toilets: Implementation of biodegradable toilets that reduce waste and environmental impact.
– Community Engagement: Workshops and training sessions to educate residents about maintenance and hygiene practices, ensuring the sustainability of the facilities.
– Regular Maintenance Schedule: A dedicated team will oversee the upkeep of the sanitation facilities for 36 months to guarantee cleanliness and functionality.
The ASP is funded through a combination of municipal resources and partnerships with the Provincial government through the Department of Human Settlement.
“Sanitation is not merely a service; it’s a fundamental human right enshrined in our Constitution. We believe that everyone deserves access to dignified sanitation and clean living conditions. Together we can make this a reality.”
