‘Mluuuuuungu’ plays at Pooe Festive Season Tournament

"This is a lifetime experience for me to play not only in the township but also in front of such a big crowd."

EVATON.- Local soccer fans were excited to see a white player playing at the Pooe Festive Tournament this week.

This was the first time a player from a white community had played at the tournament. Rodriguez Loger is playing for Perfect Academy. Every time he touched the ball the soccer fans would say “Mlungu”.

Loger came in as a substitution when Perfect Academy beat Destroyers FC 4-0 in the group stages. Despite the big crowd, Loger was never intimidated by the atmosphere. He knew this was one of the biggest tournaments in Gauteng. He also didn’t put his foot wrong as he made some exciting touches playing as winger.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Lodger said he was overwhelmed by the love the soccer fans showed to him.

He told Sedibeng Ster Sports that he could not understand what the fans were saying because every time he touched the ball they would scream “mlunguuuuu” but as the game progressed his teammates explained to him what it means.

“I really enjoy playing here and people are passionate about football. I was nervous when we arrived at the ground seeing so many people. My coach told me just to relax and enjoy myself. This is a lifetime experience for me to play not only in the township but also in front of such a big crowd. I’m happy that we won the game and this boosted my confidence”, he said.

Perfect Academy coach Sechaba Mofokeng said they intend to sign Lodger for the SAFA Sedibeng Hollywood Bets League in the new year.

“We are really interested in signing him because it has been a while since we had a player from a white community playing in the league. I could see how soccer fans were excited to see a white player at the tournament. He was warmly welcomed by everyone,” said Mofokeng.

Perfect Academy is through to the last 16 of the tournament.
