VANDERBIJLPARK.- Richards Bay left the Isak Steyl Stadium with their tails high. This after they collected maximum points when they beat the home team Sekhukhune United 1-0 in the DSTV Diski Challenge (DDC) on Sunday.

The visitors dominated proceedings from the first whistle as they displayed some mouth-watering football much to the delight of those handful supporters in the stands. Despite Richards Bay’s domination, United also created some clear-cut chances, but failed to convert them into goals.
On the other hand, Richard Bay could have gone into the half-time break 2-0 up but their forwards were wasted in front of goals. There was a moment when they missed a one-on-one situation with a goalkeeper.

It was the same story in the second half: Both teams created scoring opportunities but failed to convert them. The score does not accurately reflect the game; despite Richards Bay’s domination, it could have gone either way. United came in second, purposely taking the game to the visitors in search of an equaliser but was denied by brilliant goalkeeping from Richards Bay’s goalkeeper.

Furthermore, Richards Bay continued with ball possession dominance even though it didn’t result in goals in the second half. It was forward and backward passes with no end results. The majority of players were new with the likes of Tshidiso Tshehla not there. It was clear that they missed him in the middle of the park. Tshehla was United’s playmaker in the middle of the park making things happen. However, on Sunday, there was no creativity in the middle of the park with Richards Bay enjoying most of the ball possession.

WORDS FROM FORMER COACH: Vince de Lisa: “It was a good game of football to watch with both teams keeping the ball possession nicely, but Richards Bay was the better team on the day. They came here not for a draw but with a winning mentality. Most of the teams when they play away, they intend not to lose, but Richards Bay was offensive from the get-go. They deserved to win the game as they were more constructive in moving the ball around. As for Sekhukhune United, they were predictable in how they played. They were the younger team though, but they were very persistent in the second half.”
