Maloka is once again Sedibeng’s mayor

First, the council removed her during a motion of no confidence, and now the same council has re-elected her as mayor again.

VEREENIGING – Three weeks after the ANC mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality, Lerato Maloka, was removed during a motion of no confidence, she was re-elected as mayor on Tuesday.

Maloka and the DA’s Prudence Hlanyane were nominated as candidates during Tuesday’s special council meeting of the Sedibeng District Municipality at the Vereeniging Civic Centre, after which voting commenced.

Maloka won with 25 votes. Hlanyane got 24 votes.

Maloka was ousted three weeks ago during a council meeting after 26 councillors voted against her and 21 councillors voted for her.

Last week, when a new mayor had to be elected, council members were evacuated after someone set off pepper spray or tear gas canisters in the council meeting.

However, voting continued on Tuesday.
