Pirates does Chiefs a huge favour in Vaal

Pirates’ babies looked like a new team altogether with every player on the field prepared to die with their boots on.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Orlando Pirates did what many thought was mission impossible when they defeated the log leaders Stellenbosch 3-1. This was in the DSTV Diski Challenge fixture played at Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday.

No one gave Pirates a chance coming into this game with Stellies’ tails high at the top of the log. However, despite, this defeat they are still at the top with 44 points from 20 games. Kaizer Chiefs is second on the log with 42 points and two games in hand. It was celebration after celebration on the Pirates bench with their coach Jospeh Makhanya jumping up and down together with his technical staff, like a kid who found his lost toy.

No one can blame him for his excitement considering they beat the team sitting at the summit of the log.

It was a great advert for football with the handful of soccer fans on the stand enjoying every moment of action. The local soccer fans came in numbers to witness this exciting affair with Pirates’ babies taking charge and circulating the ball all over the field.

It was like watching their senior team with the same playing identity. However, Makhanya felt they could have done much more, especially scoring goals. Pirates created numerous scoring chances but were wasteful in front of goals. Meanwhile, Pirates will host Golden Arrows at the same venue on March 8.

COACH WORDS: “I must compliment my boys for their outstanding performance today. I must say we played very well and put everything we practiced at training into this game. We can only improve from here.”
