SILO Institute of Love celebrates 20th Anniversary
Despite her age, she still has a sharp mind.
SEBOKENG.- It was a trip down memory lane when The Silo Institute of Love celebrated its 20th Anniversary in grand style recently.
This two-day celebration took place in Sebokeng, Moshoeshoes Street where the centre is situated. The founder of this SILO Maria ‘Mama Silo’ Molefi (70) shared her touching story of how it all began 20 years ago.
The tearful Molefe said it wasn’t easy. “With God’s grace, I had the strength not to give up despite the circumstances.” This retired teacher said when she started this centre, little did she know that one day she would be celebrating a milestone in the centre’s existence. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the emotional ‘Mama Silo’ said she was sent by God to serve. She believes this is not a job but a calling.

She told Sedibeng Ster that the centre promotes love within the community. In a heart-to-heart interview with Sedibeng Ster, Molefi said she had to share her family home with the community, especially strangers, young and old. She shed tears when she recalled how she started this centre from nothing. She boasted about her work as well as messages she received from high-profile individuals she helped.

Her commitment and dedication are unquestionable. Despite her age, she still has a sharp mind and remembers some of the things that happened 20 years ago as if it happened yesterday. The Silo Institute of Love empowers young and old, providing them with self-empowerment skills including cooking, sewing, and beading among others.
“I was overwhelmed when one of the people referred to me as an ambassador of love because of the teaching and preaching to the community. I’m grateful for what I have done for the community, especially those who were part of this centre.”
