
SASOLBURG – The 30th Sasol Sasolburg Marathon was won by Katleho Muso from Cell C Running Club, Gauteng in 02:28:17 on Saturday, March 29. According to World Athletics, this time places him 16th in South Africa this year. Rose Jijana from Actom Athletics Club in Vanderbijlpark won the ladies’ 42km event.

Running in the 40-49 year category, Rose, a former Sasol Banyana Banyana soccer player, completed the race in an excellent 03:13:46.
This year, 3 468 athletes signed up for the race. As Comrades qualifier, the 42km Sasol Sasolburg Marathon attracted 809 entries, of which the average running time of 04:22:40 was well below the required Comrades qualifying time of sub 4 hours 50 minutes.
The 893 athletes who took on the 21km race, ran an average time of 02:20:33. Mbuti Mollo, an individual runner, won in 01:08:28, while the former national half marathon champion, Cornelia Joubert from Boxer Superstores Athletics Club, won the ladies’ race in 01:27:51.
Over the years the 10km race at the Sasol Sasolburg Marathon has become increasingly popular. This year 1 084 athletes entered, running an average time of 01:19:05. This is a vast increase compared to the 610 runners that competed in the 10km race last year. Mohau Masoenyane from Black Diamond Athletics Club took the honours when he crossed the finish line in 00:32:33, to win the men’s race. Karin-Mari Dötze from Boxer Superstores Athletics Club, Gauteng North, won the ladies’ race in 00:38:32.
