Community spirit reigns during Easter egg hunt event

This year’s theme was 'together in hope'. Talking about the theme, Slabbert says it was chosen to emphasise the strength of unity and the power of community.

VEREENIGING – The Mekayla Memorial NPC’s third annual Easter egg hunt event was a resounding success. The event held on April 21 brought a strong spirit of unity and community to Leeuhof. The event saw over 350 children from the community and the surrounding area eagerly participating in the search for hidden Easter eggs and treats.

Founder and event organiser Anne-Marie Slabbert says, “The purpose of this event is to bring hope, joy, and support to our community, especially to the most vulnerable. It’s about creating a space where children can laugh freely, the elderly feel valued, and families are reminded that they are not alone.”
Through this initiative, Slabbert says the NPC aims to uplift spirits and meet some of the most basic human needs, whether it’s a warm meal, a thoughtful gift, or simply a day filled with kindness.

This year’s theme was ‘together in hope’. Talking about the theme, Slabbert says it was chosen to emphasise the strength of unity and the power of community.

“In a world that often feels divided, we wanted to celebrate how coming together in small ways can create meaningful change and restore faith in humanity. The heart and dedication of everyone involved made this event a success. From the volunteers who gave their time so generously, the sponsors who believed in our mission, and the community members who showed up with open hearts, it was a true team effort.”

Slabbert says the joy on the children’s faces and the gratitude from the elderly were the biggest measure of success.

Slabbert thanked her donours, including Eskom Lethabo Power Station, Lions Vereeniging, Caring Daisies, Sekunjalo Rollers, Olympic Bottle Store, and private donors, adding that their support went far beyond financial contributions but sent a message of love and solidarity.

“Because of you, we were able to spread hope, share joy, and build a stronger community. We are deeply grateful, and we look forward to growing this partnership in the future.”

Ward 15 councilor Prudence Hlanyane said the event not only provided entertainment but also served as an opportunity for community members to come together and build connections.

“This event brought joy to local children, providing a safe and engaging environment for them to enjoy. Anne-Marie worked tirelessly to bring smiles to the children of Leeuhof and the surrounding areas. Her dedication to the community is evident in the success of this event, which has become a staple in the area’s annual calendar.”

Slabbert says that by being present at the event, Hlanyane demonstrated her continued commitment to supporting community initiatives.
