MEYERTON – The police have recovered a cache of illegal firearms following a dramatic shootout between two rival security companies at the taxi rank on the morning of May 20. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers recovered 10 AK-47 rifles and nine 9mm pistols at the scene while combing the area after the incident.

The motive for the shootout is still under investigation. The incident during peak traffic near the busy taxi rank in Meyerton’s central business district (CBD) sent shockwaves through the community. One person, reportedly affiliated with one of the security firms, sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital.

Police went to the school and verified that no scholar was injured during the shooting.

In a separate report by Vaalweekblad earlier today, it was revealed that a learner from Hoërskool Dr. Malan was struck by a stray bullet, prompting concern and outrage from parents.

However, police have disputed this claim, stating that no learner was injured.

The use of military-grade firearms, such as AK-47s, in a public setting has raised serious concerns about the presence and conduct of private security companies operating in the area.
