Rele Mofokeng Foundation Top16 Tournament

The local soccer fans packed the venue to capacity to support this initiative and their teams.

SHARPEVILLE-. Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng’s foundation hosted the Top 16 Soccer Tournament over the weekend.

Mofokeng, who happened to come from Sharpeville in Vaal, hosted a soccer tournament at James and Pepsi soccer grounds in Phelandaba.
The tournament started on Saturday with senior soccer teams battling it out throughout the day. The local soccer fans packed the venue to capacity to support this initiative and their teams.

It was a great weekend of football, with the participating teams entertaining the soccer fans with some exciting football. This tournament also involved the junior soccer teams, which started their tournament campaign on Monday.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Sechaba Mofokeng, who is in charge of the tournament, said this tournament will continue until the school reopens after the holidays. It was action galore throughout the week when the junior soccer teams competed against each other at the same venues. This tournament is part of Mofokeng’s aim to plough back into his community, growing up in Sharpeville, playing in those dusty soccer grounds before his rise to stardom.

Mofokeng started his youth football playing for Celeb Youth Academy in Sharpeville.

This is the team that discovered his talent long before the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Schools of Excellence, and Orlando Pirates witnessed his potential. Mofokeng, who is Relebohile’s father, said this tournament aims to give the local youngsters a platform to showcase their talent.

“Rele decided to organise this tournament via his foundation to give these upcoming youngsters a chance to prove themselves. When he told us that he wanted to organise this tournament, we gave him our blessings because this is going to benefit the local youngsters. I was overwhelmed by the talent I witnessed since the tournament started on Saturday. Rele started his amateur football at these soccer grounds before he became who he is today,” said Mofokeng’s father.
