Neglected building sparks safety fears in CE 5

Residents are now left feeling vulnerable and unheard, as crime in the area slowly creeps closer to home.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The residents of CE 5 have raised a concern about a neglected building in their neighbourhood.

The neglected building seems to have formerly housed a church and what looks like convenience stores.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the residents said that the neglected building on Robert Broom Street is affecting the safety and quality of life in their neighbourhood, as it is located within a residential area populated by families and children.

Seemingly it has been left to deteriorate for years.

“This neglected building has now become an eyesore and a potential breeding ground for criminal activity. There is increasing concern that it is being used for illicit gatherings, substance abuse, and other illegal activities,” community members said.

Community leaders have taken an initiative to engage with the property owner, appealing for the buildings to be secured or rehabilitated. Their concerns, however, were met with complete disregard.

Residents are now left feeling vulnerable and unheard, as crime in the area slowly creeps closer to home.

“We are calling on the public, local government, and civic organisations to help us demand accountability and immediate action. Our community deserves to feel safe. We cannot wait until a serious incident occurs before something is done,” said Thakadi Tshabangu, a concerned resident.

“We hope that by raising awareness through your publication/s, those in authority will be moved to act, and that other communities facing similar issues will also feel empowered to speak out,” Tshabangu said.

At the time of going to print, Sedibeng Ster could not determine who the owner of the building is.

An enquiry has, however, been sent to the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM).
