VANDERBIJLPARK.- Clapham High School’s boys and girls’ soccer teams were crowned the 2025 Gauteng Schools Wednesday Championships.
This school’s league programme concluded at Isak Steyl Stadium on September 23.

Clapham boys’ team celebrated their third consecutive title, while the girls’ team triumphed by unseating the previous two-time champions, Jabulile Secondary School, who finished third in the competition. This marked the end of these exciting school programmes, which involved volleyball, soccer, and netball.

The schools’ success is due to their partnership with Mamelodi Sundowns development. They never disappointed throughout the league championships as they kept on collecting maximum points in all the games they played. This school’s championship league initiative was launched in 2023 with the code of football to allow winning schools at the district level to participate in this programme.

This programme was initiated by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation to revive the Wednesday Schools Sports. It has been a great success with the MEC for Education, Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation in Gauteng, Matome Chiloane, fully behind this initiative.

Speaking after the games, Chiloane hailed this school’s championships league programme as a great success. He was full of compliments for the participants’ schools, praising them for making this programme exciting from start to finish. He said the significance of school sports lies in nurturing and developing athletes. Chiloane said this impact cannot be achieved without the support of fans, parents and the wider community.

“The support is crucial in impacting these future championships for our teams and for our national sports,” he said.
