SHARPEVILLE.- Pink was the order of the day during the 1st Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Games at the George Thabe Stadium over the weekend.
The two-day awareness games began on Saturday with netball games and concluded with a 5 km and 10km Fun Walk/Run on Sunday.

The community, young and old, came in numbers to support this initiative, as October is known as Cancer Awareness Month. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Themba Zwelibanzi who is one of the main organisers of this event, said he was overwhelmed by the positive response from the community.

He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that he didn’t expect such attendance since it was the first time they hosted this event. This initiative was to create awareness for breast cancer victims and survivors.

Zwelibanzi said the decision was made to organise this event in memory of one of the people who died due to breast cancer last year. He said he made this commitment to create awareness within the community and see how best he can help those who suffer from breast cancer.

He said one of his wishes is to have a breast cancer centre in the Vaal, where those with breast cancer would receive treatment, especially medication, instead of travelling to Johannesburg.

“I was told that the breast cancer patients had to travel to Johannesburg to collect their treatment, and I will establish how true this is. If indeed this is true, then I think we must have our own breast cancer centre here in the Vaal. These awareness games were a great success thanks to everyone who came to support us. I do not doubt that next year it will be bigger than this year,” he concluded.
