Midvaal Mile open-water swim to make debut at Bass Lake

Swimmers gear up for the Midvaal Mile at Bass Lake this November

MIDVAAL – A brand-new open-water swimming event, the Midvaal Mile, will make its debut at Bass Lake in Henley on Klip on Sunday, November 9, with organisers positioning it as a professionally timed race suitable for both competitive and recreational swimmers.

The event offers two race distances — a 1.6 km ‘mile’ swim priced at R250 per person, and a shorter 600 m swim at R200 per participant.

The race officially starts at 08:00, with entries reportedly closing soon.

Organisers say they aim to grow the Midvaal Mile into a marquee sporting event for the area. Early community interest has been strong — but so too were questions from residents about the water quality at Bass Lake.

Responding publicly, the event team assured swimmers that independent safety testing had been completed. Bass Lake was declared “low pH levels, safe for recreational use, SANAS certified safe, crystal-clear water,” according to a statement shared on their official page.

The Midvaal Mile is billed as a timed open-water swim, not a casual fun swim, and has already attracted interest from athletes who participated in recent regional events such as the Madmac Marathon hosted in Meyerton.

For any enquiries or last-minute entries, participants can contact Nicole Steenkamp on 072 149 3488 or Elzana Swanepoel on 083 642 6186.

Entries can also be made here. For more information and updates, check out the Midvaal Mile’s official Facebook page.
